he volunteers from Northern Spirit K9 first saw me when they first came out to the reserve.
The volunteers from Northern Spirit K9 Rescue came out
to feed the dogs on the reserve. They had feed all the dogs and were leaving the reserve when they saw a black dog, and a white one
running in the ditch. They stopped to feed us when they noticed that the black dog had a hurt leg that was bleeding and appeared to be
infected. They picked him up, put him in the back of the vehicle, put some food down for me, and started to drive away. I didn't want
them to leave me behind so I started running after the vehicle. Looking in the rearview mirror, they saw me running and felt really bad
that they were leaving me, so they stopped and picked me up as well.We were taken to the veterinary clinic, where the black dog (Jake) was treated for a broken leg. (See Jake's Story)
There was not too much wrong with me, I was underweight, had fleas, parasites, and my coat was matted and dirty. I stayed in the clinic with my friend Jake and got a bath, my matts cut out, and then netured. I didn't have a name when I was at the clinic, so the staff named me Spirit. After 4 days in the clinic I was taken to a foster home.
At the foster home I had food, treats and friends to play with. A few people came forward to adopt me, but them they changed their mind, I don't know why because I was a good looking boy, and well behaved.
The founder of the rescue decided to keep me and that's when they decided to form a not for profit rescue and use my name, hence Northern Spirit K9 Rescue.
I have been with them now for three years and have friends to play with, food, treats, and lots of love. I am a gengle soul, love to play with small children, cats and because I am such a calm dog I am going to be a therapy dog, right now I am in training. Soon I will be able to visit Senior's centres, hospitals, and schools. I am not afraid of walkers or wheelchairs and just love to put my head on someone's knee for a pat. Just recently the rescue attended a fundraiser and I was there to help out, and donated blood to help out other dogs. So now I am a blood donor for dogs and will give blood 4 times per year. If you think your dog will be a good candidate for donating blood, visit NAIT Animal Sciences for information.
